DIY Halloween Decorations | Ghost Tassel Garland
Looking for cheap and easy DIY Halloween Decorations that still look cute? These Ghost Tassels are the perfect addition to your Halloween display and won’t break the bank.
Hello, Hello!
We are nearly 10 days away from Halloween and I wanted to give my grandmother’s fire mantle a little Halloween flare. She is definitely NOT into spooky like my husband and I are, so I thought some simple DIY Halloween Decorations were in order. And these little ghost tassels are perfect for her. If you are looking for a last minute Halloween decoration on a budget then look no further!
What you’ll need:
- Yarn (whatever colors and textures you’d like) – You can buy the exact ones I used at Michael’s or online here: Premier Home Cotton Yarn. I purchased Orange and White.
- Scissors – If you’re in the market for new scissors, I highly recommend the Westcott® Soft Handle Titanium Bonded Scissors
- A book or piece of cardboard that is 5″-7″ wide (I used a small photo album)
- Black Sharpie
- Scotch Tape
Step 1
Start by taping the end of the yarn to the edge of the base and wrap the yarn around the width of your base 25 times (you could wrap more times if you want your tassels thicker). Cut the end.
Step 2:
Cut a string of yarn about 3″-4″ long and slip it under the wrapped yarn so it is between the wrap and the base. Slide it up so it is at the top of the wrap (pictured above).
Step 3:
Tie the string tightly in a double knot to secure the tassel.
Step 4:
Remove the tape and slide the tassel off the base.
Step 4:
Cut the loops on the side opposite from the tie to create the loose ends.
Step 5:
Cut another string of yarn (about 4″) and wrap it about 1 inch down from the top. This is going to create the head of the ghost.
Step 6:
Secure the string with a couple of tight knots.
Step 7:
With a sharpie, draw on eyes and a mouth. You could even hot glue on a couple of googly eyes or use beads to create the face. It’s completely up to you! I even added a little bowtie to some of my ghosts and I can’t get over how cute it looks.
Step 8:
Cut a string of yarn to your desired length (I cut mine long enough to fit the length of the fire mantle with a little bend). It’s better if you cut a length that’s longer than you think you will need because you can always shorten it. I used two different colors of yarn and wrapped them around each other to create a candy-cane-like swirl. Tie the ends of the yarn in loops and string one end through the head of your tassels.
That’s it! Super simple, right? My grandma and I absolutely love how it turned out! I would LOVE to see your ghost tassels, so please share your creations with me on Instagram at @officialhaleydaily.
Have fun and I hope you have a very happy Halloween! <script type=”text/javascript” async defer src=”//assets.pinterest.com/js/pinit.js”></script>
